The process starts with the team engaging in conceptual riffing, then a lot of drawing, discussion of materials, identifying appropriate workrooms, a lot of prototyping and trial and error, before working out production logistics, and entering a new piece into the GHF line. Sometimes pieces emerge from designing furniture for clients, and often the ideas come out of thin air.
GHF gravitates towards sculptural forms and geometric lines. The metal furniture is divided into two categories — cast and fabricated. Our three cast bronze tables are made using the lost wax process; a centuries old process in which the wax positive is melted away and molten bronze is poured into the mold.
We offer furniture in bronze or stainless steel. The fabricated pieces are made with ¼” thick solid bronze plate or ¼” thick stainless steel plate. The material is precision cut and welded into shape.
The in-house upholstery workshop uses full ¼” hardwood lumber, heavier than the commonly used alternative, so the pieces stand up to the test of time. Production is carefully controlled, and all frames are glued, screwed and doweled for longevity. All springs are hand tied eight times with precision knotting, and the fabric and padding are all meticulously applied by artisans.
